BIRMINGHAM RACE COURSE
» VIEW Lomax Kennel story
The Birmingham Race Course, 10 miles east of downtown Birmingham, is one of three dog tracks in Alabama. The track has 11 racing kennels (including the Lomax Kennel), with each having 50 to 70 dogs. Races are daily except Sunday; matinee races are Wednesday and Saturday. In addition to live racing, it has simulcast wagering from other venues across the United States. The 250-acre complex was designed in 1987 to showcase thoroughbred racing, but lack of interest resulted in bankruptcy only after a year of operation. Milton McGregor, owner of Victoryland Greyhound Park in Shorter, Ala., bought the track; introducing greyhound racing to the city.
